Wed Night AA: Speaker Meeting

Good evening,
This being the last wednesday of the month (of the year for that matter), we'll be having our usual Speaker Meeting this wednesday night. Personally, I love speaker meeting for 2 reasons: 1- It's a great way, at least for a good speaker, to illustrate through their experience how the program works -- how to practice these principles in all our affairs, and 2- It's a great way to get to know someone in the program, after hearing a person's story you really can't help but feel closer  to that person.
On that note, I had a curios conversation this weekend. I was visiting my father and I mentioned to him that some of my old classmates were talking about our upcoming 15th year HS reunion (holy crap, 15 years?! 😨). I noted how difficult is to make friends like the type of friends you make when you're a kid. His reply has been marinating in my noggin for the last few days (proof wisdom can be found in the strangest of places!!).

What he said was that as an adult we see the people we meet, to one degree or another, as a source of competition - competition for money, property, prestige, sex, self-esteem, security, etc. As a kid, that concept hasn't yet fomented in so we're free to bond at a deeper level.

In a way, that's what makes AA so special too. When I first came to AA, the folks I met here did NOT want what I had!!! They didn't want money, or anything material from me and they sure as hell didn't want any of my so-called "wisdom" - they just wanted to help me with this drink problem and the only requirement was the willingness to go to any length. There was no sense of competition which can pervade "regular" life. Something about the friends I've made in AA reminds me of the type of friends I made as a kid because of this.

For this new year, my wish for you is to return to that state of innocence where the world was not some hideous place where we needed to "out think, out maneuver and out perform our peers in order to eek out a miserable living from the salt mines of an unfriendly universe" (Chuck C), but a place of wonder, discovery and joy -- where an open heart is all you need.

Best regards,
David ten Brink

A Drunk, Like You p398-406

Hi everyone, My apologies on sending this out late this week, I've been battling a little bit of a cold lately. Anywho, I'd like to thank Dave W. for sharing his excellent story with us last week, nothing helps recovery along like a heavy dose of humor & depravity and Jesus Dave delivered in spades!! Also I'd like to remind everyone of the upcoming AA convention in Manuel Antonio that's taking place from May 6-8th. We're still working on the details of organizing our group to get out there but let me know if your interested and go online to  register now  -  It's FREE!!  (to register anyways, you pay later!!) This week we'll be reading  A Drunk, like You p398-406 . This was the first time for me reading it and I got a lot out of it. Aside from the fact that I always love listening to another  Member of the Tribe  breaking barriers by showing that alcoholism is no respecter of race, religion or creed, proving you  jew *i mean too*  ...

My Bottle, My Resentments, and Me p437-445

Good evening everyone, Just wanted to send out a quick email and let everyone know that there will be a meeting this wednesday even though it is Semana Santa. We will be reading  My Bottle, My Resentments, and Me p437-445.  I would ask one favor because I am heading out for Nicaragua that very night at 11pm if we could all please arrive punctually so we can close a bit early I'd appreciate it (I know, I'm talking to alcoholics, it's a lost cause.... lol)    Let me know if you can make it please! Best Regards, David t

The Perpetual Quest p388-397

Good evening everyone, Before I get to the weekly reminder, I wanted to inform everyone, if you didn't know already, that this years  Manual Antonio AA International Convention  is coming up. The convention will be May 6, 7 & 8th (Fri thru Sunday). I think it would be awesome if we could get a group of the wednesday night men's group to go. I even got a hall pass from my significant other already!! You can check out the convention and  register online here  . There are no upfront fees, you pay when you show up. You do need to reserve a hotel room ahead of time and I'd like to get a head count so maybe we can split some rooms between us. Go ahead and take a look at the website and we can discuss everything at the end of the meeting this week. This wednesday night we will be going over  The Perpetual Quest p388-397.  I thought this was a very interesting story, brought me back to a time early in recovery when things seemed more complicated and yet simpl...
