Hi John, I've been thinking about our conversation the other day about what things to put down on your moral inventory. We've made an excellent beginning with steps 1,2 and 3, but I'm concerned that you don't feel like you have much to put down for your fourth step. Having only 3 things on there (even if they're big ones) means you're damn close to being a saint!!  I wish it were true you were a saint, but lets face it.... Saints don't walk into Alcoholics Anonymous looking for help at your age!! lol When you quit drinking, your life got a little better. Even without the alcohol, however, you're still left with all of the personality traits that drove you to drink in the first place. A moral inventory is meant to be a complete list of everything that has occurred in your life which may be a source of negative emotion. Hello everyone,     We had another excellent meeting next week, I feel like we've set the bar real high for this week! We will be delving into Chapter 5 -- How It Works.     I always hear people make the comment "I haven't a clue HOW the program works" when really I think it would be more accurate to say I haven't a clue WHY it works. There is a whole chapter written on How it Works and you could even go so far as to say ALL of the 164 pages in the front of the Big Book explain how it works... Seems to me HOW it works is covered!! Why it works is another story (maybe... there is a higher power at work?).      Point of interest, I always kind of thought when doing step work that Chapter 5 was the place to start... but upon closer inspection the chapter only briefly mentions steps 1,2 and 3 and is mostly about step 4!! Hmmm.... maybe that's why there are 4 chapters ahead of it?!?! Who'da Thunk it?! See everyone soon. Regards, ...

Sorry about the late e-mail but I got a little side tracked with Monday Night Football, my niners are down 14-0 but it's only the 2nd quarter... :-/      Anyways, back to business --  and what business!! Chapter 4 - We Agnostics is the best piece of spiritual information I've ever read. Growing up, I was educated in the religion of my ancestors and liked to tell myself that I believed in this God idea. Never would I have categorized myself as "agnostic", much less atheist, so for a long time I thought this chapter didn't apply to me.     Having watched our human resources, as marshaled by the will, fail utterly; we came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. Except I thought, in my twisted alcoholic mind, that I had already tried faith and found it wanting. If we were to truly ask for his protection ...

Good evening folks,         This week we will be covering Chapter 3 - More About Alcoholism .  In case you ever get the odd notion that all the knowledge we've acquired about alcoholism, on its own, will be sufficient  to keep you from that next drink, this chapter aims to show beyond a reasonable doubt that ... "the actual or potential alcoholic, with hardly an exception, will be absolutely unable to stop drinking on the basis of self-knowledge."  (p39). Now that's good information to keep in mind!!!
