Chapter 2 - There is a Solution

Hey fellas, First off, want to thank Larry H. for his share and a terrific speaker meeting last week!! This week we will be going over Chapter 2 - There is a solution. "If you are as seriously alcoholic as we were, we believe there is no middle-of-the-road solution. We were in a position where life was becoming impossible, and if we had passed into the region from which there is no return through human aid, we had but two alternatives: One was to go on to the bitter end, blotting out the consciousness of our intolerable situation as best we could; and the other, to accept spiritual help. This we did because we honestly wanted to, and were willing to make the effort." - bottom of pg.25. It goes on to describe the story of  Rowland Hazzard III , a wealthy American business man from Rhode Island (1881-1945). Rowland had cross that threshold with his drinking and after having sought help from top American psychiatrists to no avail, he went to Europe where he consulted wi...

Chapter 1 Bill's Story pgs.1-16

Good Afternoon, Hope everyone had a wonderful long "15 de Septiembre" weekend!! This week we are going into  Bill's Story - Chapter 1 - pgs.1-16. Personally, I've always felt the most powerful tool one alcoholic has at his disposal, if he wishes to help another alcoholic, is their story. It is one's own story that enables an alcoholic to instantly gain the trust and confidence of another alcoholic where the doctor, minister or friend failed. Bill was an astute salesman (we seem to have a lot of those in our rooms don't we?), so as soon as the problem had been explained in the Doctor's Opinion he recounts his own story in an effort to secure the reader's trust and confidence. Now Bill was a Wall Street Stock Speculator, he was a night school lawyer,  he was veteran of foreign wars,  an avid golfer, and a whole host of other things, which in my case, I couldn't identify with. His drinking, however, that I could identify with once I truly and ...

The Doctor's Opinion pg. xxv - xxxii

Good evening everyone,       This week we've got (you guessed it...) MORE ROMAN NUMERALS!! Numerals xxv - xxxii to be exact. We will be reading the Doctors Opinion. From On-Line Sources: Dr. Silkworth, a graduate of Princeton University, obtained his medical degree from New York University-Bellevue Medical School, he specialized in neurology. He treated 40,000 alcoholics during his career spending his last years at Knickerbocker Hospital in New York. Dr. Silkworth saw alcoholism as an illness, a manifestation of an allergy. The doctor's opinion gives us a rational basis from which to begin our examination of the problem of alcoholism. Our own experience validates his view of the physcial aspects of alchollism. When we begin to drink we develop a craving for more alcohol that is beyond our ability to control.  Dr. Silkworth treated Bill W. for alcoholism the second, third, and fourth times he was admitted to Town's Hospital in New York. Dr. Silkwor...

Preface & Foreword to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Editions

Good evening everyone, This week we begin in earnest our dive back into the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. This master piece, from which our movement has sprung up in over 170 countries with an  estimated total  of 115,358 groups and more than  2 million members worldwide , is the main text of Alcoholics Anonymous. In these pages, countless number of once hopeless alcoholics have found a solution to their drink problem. This week we begin with the  very first page up to roman numeral xxiv . Now if you're anything like me, when we first opened this book we assumed anything with roman numerals on it was gibberish and just skipped it!!  Having come to appreciate the depth and complexity of our program, I'm excited and looking forward to the following months as we explore and discover that which makes our fellowship truly wonderful. Best Regards, David t 2014 Meeting Dates 01/29/14  Speaker Meeting <Shane B> 02/26/14  Speaker...
